The outpour from fans and even the Guardians of the Galaxy cast may not be enough...
James Gunn has recently been caught up in a Twitter storm over tweets he made between 2009-2012. If you read them some do feel in pour taste and all jokes aside it has resulted in the House of Mouse firing Gunn as director for the upcoming film Guardians of the Galaxy Volume III.
Despite the outpouring of support from the cast and fans alike a new report from Variety states that the Walt Disney Studios is unlikely to rehire James Gunn. The decision to remove Gunn apparently came from the highest branches of the Disney Studios, with chief Alan Horn and company CEO Bob Iger weighing in.
Gunn was hardly on anyone's radar as a director until he managed to bring the first two Guardians of Galaxy films to $1.6 billion in the worldwide box office. Cast members of the film were quick to come to his defense with an open letter to the Disney executives:
“We fully support James Gunn. We were all shocked by his abrupt firing last week and have intentionally waited these ten days to respond in order to think, pray, listen, and discuss. In that time, we’ve been encouraged by the outpouring of support from fans and members of the media who wish to see James reinstated as as director of Volume 3 as well as discouraged by those so easily duped into believing the many outlandish conspiracy theories surrounding him.”
Fans shouldn't begin to panic. Disney knows the weight on their shoulder with delivering another epic installment into the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise - especially now that all eyes will be on them if they hire a different director. Meanwhile, we can be sure that no actors will be walking offset as their contracts have then trapped within the House of Mouse until they're completed.
