The last vestige of the Fox X-Men universe films has finally gotten another release date. The New Mutants will be released on August 28, 2020. Now under the Disney/Marvel umbrella, fans are eager to see what Marvel will do with this film.

Is it part of the MCU? Will it be released in cinemas or a streaming service? Is it even good? But more importantly, who the hell are the New Mutants anyways?

The New Mutants are a group of teenaged mutant superheroes created by Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod. They first appeared back Marvel comics in 1982. Just like the original X-Men, The New Mutants were scouted by Professor Charles Xavier.

With The New Mutants coming out, I’m going to be focusing on the specific new mutants who appear in the film.

Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane

Rahne is a Scottish mutant who was raised as an orphan by an abusive pastor named Reverend Craig. When her mutant powers manifested, Reverend Craig led an angry mob intent on burning Rahne at the stake.

Luckily, Rahne was rescued and later adopted by Moira McTaggert. Afterwards, she met Professor X who recruited her to become a student and join the original New Mutants as Wolfsbane.

Now, what abilities does Rahne have?

As her codename suggests, Rahne has the mutant ability to transform herself into a wolf at will. She retains her human intelligence as she transforms into either a humanoid lupine form resembling a werewolf, or an actual wolf.

In any of her wolf forms, Rahne gains enhanced senses of hearing, sight, smell, animal-like strength, agility, reflexes, razor-sharp talons and fangs, and bestial instincts. She is able to see into the infrared and ultraviolet portions of the electromagnetic spectrum which enables her to perceive heat patterns and see in the dark.

Rahne possesses regenerative abilities which allow her to recover from injuries much quicker than a normal human.

Sam Guthrie / Cannonball

As a young boy, Sam worked in the coal mines of Kentucky. One day, Sam finds himself trapped in a collapsing mine shaft and while attempting to rescue his fellow workers his mutant ability manifested saving their lives.

Sam was then hired by Donald Pierce of the Hellfire Club and is ordered to defeat and kill the New Mutants. Sam rebels against Pierce saving the New Mutants and joins them under the codename Cannonball.

Now, what abilities does Sam have?

Sam possesses the ability to bodily generate thermo-chemical energy and release it from his skin. The energy is used as thrust to cause his body to be propelled through the air like a cannonball.

He’s able to propel himself at great heights and speeds with considerable maneuverability and control the speed and directions through sheer will. At first, he was only able to release the energy from his legs and feet but eventually learned to fire it from almost any part of his body to a wide array of effects.

The energy he releases creates a “blast-field” which is impenetrable and virtually indestructible and protects his body from harm. Sam can use his blast-shield to function as a personal shield and extend it to encompass others.

He's able to absorb outside kinetic energy to increase his own energy supply enabling him to increase the strength of his blows to create explosive shockwaves upon impact.

Danielle Moonstar / Mirage

Danielle, or more commonly called Dani, is a Native American mutant and when her powers manifested she had a vision of her parent’s death by a demonic bear.

Sounds like the villain from the film right?!

Shortly after her horrific vision, Dani’s parents disappear and she is taken in by her grandfather. The Hellfire Club (the same one that hires Cannonball) attempt to capture her and in the squirmish, her grandfather is killed.

Before his death, Dani’s grandfather had contacted Professor X to help Dani with her mutant abilities. She joins the New Mutants under the codename Mirage.

Now, what abilities does Dani have?

Dani possesses empathic psychic abilities to communicate with animals, people, and create three-dimensional images of visual concepts from within the minds of herself and others. Her most developed ability allowed her to manifest people’s fears or desires as realistic illusions.

She can create illusions by channeling residual thought and emotional impressions in an area by simply entering the vicinity of said area.

Dani has quasi-telepathic abilities that allow her to form a rapport with various fauna (aka animals). She can sense their feelings, consciously perceive images in their minds, and even see through their eyes.

Later, Dani was able to focus her psionic powers in energy arrows which could stun opponents by disrupting their central nervous system or force them to relive a traumatic memory.

Roberto da Costa / Sunspot

Roberto is the son of a wealthy Brazilian family. His father always pushed him to his physical and intellectual limits. Because of his father’s encouragement, Roberto rose to a star soccer player and was considered for the Olympic Games.

While playing a soccer game, racist members assaulted Roberto and his mutant powers manifested transforming him into a creature of solid black solar energy.

With the intent of capturing Roberto, Donald Pierce kidnapped his girlfriend Juliana. During a battle, Juliana sacrifices her life for Roberto by jumping in front of a bullet meant for him.

After the rescue, Roberto joins the New Mutants under the codename Sunspot.

Now, what abilities does Roberto have?

Roberto’s cells have the ability to absorb solar energy and convert it for use as physical strength. He’s able to create thermal updrafts that allow for flight, project heat and light as concussive blasts of solar energy.

He can concentrate his powers into a superhuman solar form that is entirely non-reflective black with his eyes bright white. While in his solar form Roberto has superhuman strength and enhanced durability.

Illyana Rasputin / Magik

Illyana was born in Russia and is the sister of Colossus. While a young girl, Illyana is called to the demon dimension, Limbo, by the evil sorcerer Belasco who seeks to bring forth the Elder Gods to rule the Earth.

While raised in Limbo Illyana soul slowly becomes corrupted and, as a result, is able to wield various forms of black magic.

As she gets older, Illyana plots to defeat Belasco and continuously resist the dark influence on her soul. Illyana manifests the Soulsword and uses it to take over Limbo as its new ruler and banishes Belasco.

When she returns to Earth she’s a decade older although no time had passed on earth since her kidnapping.

She joins the New Mutants under the codename Magik.

Now, what abilities does Illyana have?

Illyana has the mutant ability to teleport herself and others through time and space. Her teleportation powers have increased to allow the teleportation of multiple individuals across continents and even interplanetary and intergalactic distances.

Illyana also possesses vast abilities in the art of sorcery, Although her sorcery abilities are much stronger in Limbo, Illyana is able to cast simple spells and astral project while on Earth.

Through her training with Dr. Strange, Illyana’s magic on Earth has become considerably stronger. The more Illyana uses her magic the more her body takes on demonic features such as horns and hooves.

Illyana is able to summon a mystical armor on her body for added protection and added strength.

The Soulsword Illyana created was formed by her own life force energy. It can disrupt magical energies, constructs and creatures.
